Let’s Style Some Bud Vases (Using A Burlap Wrapped Bouquet!)

Hey there,

When designing most of our flower arrangements, we go big (because who wants to go home, right?). They’re the kind that makes you do a happy dance and reach for your phone to snap a dozen pics for the gram upon arrival to your doorstep. But one thing we’ve heard a time or two before is that sometimes, your favorite vase isn’t quite big enough to fit all those gorgeous blooms! Or better yet, you purchased our XL burlap-wrapped bouquet with plans to split those stems into multiple arrangements and put your floral designing skills to the test! No matter the reason, we’ve got a fun and easy way to use up every flower stem included in your online flower delivery. With a little creativity and a few extra vases (or even cute little jars), you can spread the love in metaflorical form by styling some bud vases. Let’s dive in!

First things first, carefully unwrap your bouquet and lay it out on a clean, flat surface. Take a moment to admire the beauty of each stem (trust us, it’ll be hard not to!) and identify which stems you want to use for each bud vase. For bud vases, we recommend choosing a few pieces of more whimsical greenery elements and some focal flowers, but there’s no right or wrong here. This is also a great time to remove any guard petals from the roses and trim any leaves or thorns from the stems that may fall below the water line once in your vase.

From there, you’ll want to trim the stems (you knew this was coming, didn’t you?) of each flower at a 45-degree angle. We love using Chikamasa Clippers but any gardening shears or even a kitchen knife will do. Cutting the stems at a 45-degree angle helps maximize water absorption, keeping your blooms fresher for longer.

Now it’s time to get creative! Start by filling your bud vases with fresh water and flower food (just be careful not to add too much – these vases are small!). Now there really is no trick to bud vases but we like to lean into staggering the height between stems like we do with all of our bigger arrangements. Flowers rarely grow the same height or super uniformly in nature and we think floral arrangements should reflect that too! So we like to make sure there’s some super tall elements and some shorter elements closer to the lip of the vase to create that effortless, imperfect vibe. To achieve this, trim (or chop for those shorter pieces!) each stem at varying heights as you go to create that staggered look.

We also love to play up the wispiness of each bud vase by using some pieces of greenery that have a more traily vibe to them and hang off to one side, so find some more malleable pieces of foliage and greens and pop them into each vase to get started. From there, use your focal flowers of choice (we love using a few ranunculus to help create that whimsical look!) and start adding those in at different heights too. Start by keeping the stems longer and cutting them shorter until you have the height you’re looking for. You can always make them shorter as you go but can’t put it in reverse!

Fill your vases and stagger the stems until you’re happy with the end result and alas! You’ve got yourself some cute bud vases. Pro tip! Design an odd number of bud vases and place them down the table to create a stunning (but oh-so easy) centerpiece with a lush, whimsical look without having to design a big arrangement. Impressive! Don’t forget to change the water for your bud vases daily and you’re ready to bloom.

So there you have it – a simple, fun way to make the most of your Farmgirl Flowers arrangement and create some smaller arrangements for the price of one (because who doesn't love a good budget moment?).
