Hey there,
Summer is here and if you’re anything like our founder and CEO, Christina, it's time to turn your backyard into the blooming paradise of your dreams (aka the garden!). In the Farmgirl world, having a garden just kinda comes naturally. It allows us to get in touch with nature even outside of the work we do day in and day out because, after all, a home garden can be anything you want it to be. It’s also such a fun way to test how different flowers grow, the types of environments certain stems thrive in, and of course, to create a magical oasis of our own.
Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting to dig in (see what we did there?), we've got the perfect products to help create a garden that's sure to impress year after year. Check out our must have products for the perfect summer!
Comfortable Gardening Gloves That Let You Multitask The Farmgirl Way
If there’s one thing you should know about us, it’s that we aren’t afraid to dig into some dirt… but just like anyone else, it’s nice to protect the hands (and still answer a quick call or text in a pinch while we’re at it). These Kebada Gardening Gloves are super comfortable and touchscreen friendly, which is a major plus for those of us bouncing between Zoom calls and giving our garden beds a quick check at lunch. What we love most about them is it actually feels like you’re not wearing gloves, so it’s easy to feel what you’re doing vs having something bulky in the way of getting things done.
Our Favorite Gardening Baskets For Harvesting and Deadheading
Whether we’re harvesting fresh flowers for this weekend’s dinner party centerpieces or a quick snip or two of veggies for tonights mean, we love the Gardeners Supply Company Harvest Baskets. They’re practical and as millennials love to say… aesthetic (and we’re all about a vibe here at Farmgirl).
For the less glamorous but totally necessary (and, to us, pretty satisfying) process of deadheading, we love using a good ol' Galvanized Steel Bucket. It’s nice and roomy to allow for a bunch of flower or foliage scraps and super easy to rinse out between sessions. You may be wondering, what is deadheading anyway? In short, it’s a process of removing dead flowers and foliage from your garden to help encourage plants to produce more flowers sooner (plus, who wants to look at dead flowers in the garden?).
Pro Tip! We love doing something similar to a fresh bouquet of flowers to help keep the rest of the flowers healthy and prevent as much bacteria from entering the vase water as possible. See a sad flower or foliage? Snip, snip! And don’t forget to change that water daily.
Tools To Keep Your Soil In Tip Top Shape
Taking proper care of your soil when gardening is KEY to ensuring the best foundation is created for your plants and flowers thrive as best they can! One of our favorite ways to help give our soil a boost is incorporating fungi to help improve root systems. We love the Plantonix Myco Bliss for this as it’s a blend of several different mycorrhizal fungi that helps improve how your soil intakes nutrients and how efficiently that happens (aka it helps plants absorb more water and nutrients!).
Now that you’ve gotten your soil a little extra help in its ability to absorb all the goodness it needs to grow, grab a Soil Testing Kit so you can check the PH levels from time to time. Depending on the plant, certain nutrients won’t absorb if the soil’s PH is too acidic or alkaline, so it’s important to know where your levels are at. If you find your soils are leaning one way or the other, there are things you can do to help bring your soil back to a more neutralized state (like adding limestone or another material). But that’s a topic for another day!
Raised Garden Beds & Arched Trellis Systems (that totally create a magical oasis)
Real talk. If we’re being honest, we didn’t get the lure toward raised garden beds until we started being reminded (more regularly than we’d like to admit) that we’re not as young as we used to be. Raised garden beds really are more comfortable for the lower back these days, especially when you’re spending a longer stretch of time gardening, so we’re a big fan. We love these Vego Garden Raised Garden Bed Kits – they’re super easy to install (even for beginners!), has everything you need to get started, and helps keep your plants organized and a bit more contained which is especially helpful as your garden expands over time!
For taller plants that prefer to grow vertically, like Wisteria or certain veggies, using an arched trellis not only provides a place for them to properly grow but also creates an oh-so magical, whimsical vibe to your garden space. The best part? These Vego Garden Modular Arched Trellis Systems can be used perfectly with those garden beds we mentioned above. These can be secured directly within the garden beds for support, which adds a lovely touch to the space as the plants begin to grow up and through the trellis grates.
