Hey there,
Not much can stop Team Farmgirl’s love of Halloween and all things fall. We’re not sure if it’s the mini Reese’s peanut butter cups, how much we love trying to recreate our favorite beauty blogger’s complicated makeup transformations on ourselves (and our littles!) or the excuse to buy dry ice (that cauldron won't bubble all by itself you know!) but all of our OTT tendencies really resonate in October, which is why we especially can’t resist getting witchy with all our bits and blooms (and greens!).
So, because you always go wild for our drop-dead gore-geous, Halloween-inspired Boo-lap wrapped bouquet, we thought it would be fun to share a how-to-design-your-own-spooky-arrangement guide that you can do to get into the spooky season with you and yours (even if that’s just you, a pair of cat ears, and the aforementioned Reese’s). And for those of you who aren’t quite into the time and patience it takes to D.I.Y your own bouquet, we’ve got you covered with our Halloween Shop, Fall Shop, and other pre-designed farm fresh flowers available for delivery.
Find Your Favorite Spooky Stems & Fall Foliage
Before we start talking specifics, let’s talk vibes. Tis the season to get spooky, which means, in our minds, creating an arrangement that even the Sanderson sisters would rave about. Taking on a life of its own with a bewitching blend of deep dark blooms and bits, pops of candy corn orange in the form of teeny tiny pumpkins and fall foliage - does it get any cuter than that?! Psst, skulls, bubbling cauldron and other spooky accouterments are strongly encouraged (more is more this time of year, right?). Okay, now that the vibes are set, let’s talk florals, foliage, and branches and other accents to help bring the bones of this arrangement to life
Floral Elements
Black Roses: Need we say more? These are the ultimate spooky flowers. If you can’t find real ones, opt for deep red or dark purple roses.
Deep Plum Anemones: If there’s one thing you should know about Team Farmgirl, it’s that we love an anemone (and we know you do too!). Using a deeper colored anemone is a great way to add a stunningly spooky element to your D.I.Y bouquet.
Scarlet Ranunculus and/or Marigolds: Their vibrant orange hue is perfect for Halloween (and are very candy-corn-esk if you ask us).
Chrysanthemums: Go for hues of dark purples, oranges, or even white varieties for a ghostly touch.
Calla Lilies: Black or dark purple calla lilies are a Farmgirl fave for adding a touch of mystery to an arrangement.
Psst… you can also check out The Big Box Shop for seasonal boxes of style-it-yourself flowers with up to 100+ stems in each!
Greenery & Foliage
Eucalyptus: There will never not be a time where we don’t recommend eucalyptus. Are you surprised? Silver dollar eucalyptus or seeded eucalyptus adds a ghostly, ethereal quality and creates a foundation for the other flowers to lean against.
Ruscus: We love this for adding onto that base of greens while incorporating a darker hue of green (which is stunning against some of the brighter flowers, like those orange ranuncs!).
Ivy: Trailing ivy can give a wild, overgrown look that’s totally on brand for spooky season.
Branches and Accents
Mini Pumpkins and/or Mini Peppers: Small, decorative pumpkins are simply so cute and usually come a few on a branch. We like to nestle these among the flowers for a totally seasonally appropriate touch!
Branches: We’re keeping this category somewhat broad because, well, the style of branches you choose to use, if any, are totally up to you. You can go out into the yard and find some smaller branches that may have fallen off a tree or bush and walla! You can also use something like Curly Willow, which is a twisted branch that has more of a tangled effect.
Berries: Hypericum berries or even blackberries can add a pop of color and texture.
Find Your Vessel
When choosing a vase or vessel to build your arrangement in, you’ll want to pick something that is only a bit wider than the number of stems you’re working with to ensure enough support. How tall or short of a vase you choose is totally up to you, just be sure to trim your stems to size so you don’t have too tall or too short of stems in your vase. From there, fill your vase at least halfway with cool, fresh water and add flower food if you have any (we love the Arber Fresh Cut Flower Food!) to help prevent bacteria from growing as quickly in the water. Give your stems a quick trim at a 45-degree angle, remove any foliage that might fall below the water line, and you’re ready to get designing!
Get Designing
When it comes to designing really any flower arrangement, spooky or not, there isn’t a trick (but we’ll take a treat!) to designing. But to achieve that signature Farmgirl look, we do like to stagger the height across different stems. What we mean by that is leaving some of the elements in your D.I.Y. arrangement longer or taller on the outside of the arrangement, while cutting other elements placed in the middle a good bit shorter (which creates a stunning V-shape!). Ultimately, flowers rarely grow the same height naturally, and we think floral arrangements should reflect that, especially when creating a spooky (and perhaps even wild) Halloween arrangement.
We also love to create some height or wispiness by using some pieces of that foliage or branches you’ve chosen. Greenery or foliage typically lends a more twisty, traily vibe to them and hangs off to one side as they’re less strong and tend not to stand up on their own quite as well. You can use these in tandem with the branches or heartier stems you’ve grabbed and weave them together for a viny vibe. From there, use your focal flower elements and other bits (hello mini pumpkins!) and start adding those in at different heights, too. Pro tip! You can always trim the stems down to shorten them, but can’t make them longer once they’re cut, so watch out! Fill your vases and stagger the stems until you’re happy with your spooky D.I.Y flower arrangement and enjoy.
