Christina's Journey To Rediscovering Alstroemeria (Our Current Floral Obsession)

For 14 years, I’ve avoided using Alstroemeria in our bouquets and arrangements. This flower is often seen in bright, primary colors at grocery stores and on other e-commerce sites and just didn’t fit our vision. But a recent experience has completely changed my perspective and I’m excited to share why Alstroemeria is now one of my favorite flowers.

When I started Farmgirl Flowers back in 2010, Alstroemeria was everywhere. Seeing them in such bright, mixed colors felt overwhelming and, well, cheap to me if I’m being completely honest. At the time, it was the go-to flower for many of our competitors and I wanted to offer something different. My perception was that Alstroemeria was a lesser choice and something that didn’t align with the high-quality, unique arrangements we aimed (and still aim) to provide. I avoided it for years, sticking to flowers that I felt better represented our brand and created that industry-differentiating design we were, and still are, constantly striving to create.

During the last holiday season, I engaged in some competitive analysis — yes, we all buy each other’s bouquets! One competitor’s bouquet included Alstroemeria and, to my surprise, what I found was that while other flowers in the arrangement wilted, the Alstroemeria remained vibrant and beautiful. Their longevity and unique shape, resembling dancing butterflies, totally caught my attention.

Intrigued by this unexpected charm, I dove into research. I discovered that breeders have developed new, stunning colors of Alstroemeria that are more muted and sophisticated than the bright, primary hues I remembered and really didn’t like. These new varieties fit beautifully into our bouquet palettes, so I knew we had to get our hands on these stems and start designing with them. Even beyond how beautiful they are, Alstroemeria flowers are incredibly resilient and lasting quite a bit longer than other stems with minimal care. They have become the workhorse of the flower world—reliable, durable, and lovely.

One of the last bits I found during my research was that alstroemeria is not only beautiful but affordable.
